  • Why Your Air Conditioning Is Short Cycling

    Palm Air AC|16 November 2016

If you’re wondering why your air conditioner turns on and off in short intervals it’s mostly likely because it is short cycling. Short cycling prevents your home from heating and cooling properly. This leads to increased utility bills, decreased life expectancy and can also be the result of multiple other problems.

Causes of a Short Cycling AC

Dirty Air Filter. Replacing your air filter regularly can save you more than you would think. A dirty air filter causes your air conditioner to have to work harder in order to filter air through it. If this goes on for long enough the buildup of dust and debris can cause the system to overheat and shut off before the cycle is over.

Low Refrigerant Level. When there is a leak in the condenser coil of your air conditioner the refrigerant will begin to escape. Refrigerant is used by A/C units to cool the air and maintain a consistent temperature. Refrigerant emits dangerous fumes that are harmful to the environment and the air quality in your home. Once refrigerant begins to leak a professional needs to fix the leak so that it won't happen again otherwise your air conditioner will continue to short cycle.

Oversized Air Conditioner. This could be one of your most costly mistakes when purchasing a new HVAC system. Short cycling happens frequently with oversized air conditioners. When a system has too much power for the space it has to cool it starts shutting off before the cycle is complete.

Iced/Dirty Evaporator Coil. A dirty or iced evaporator coil is sometimes caused by a refrigerant leak. This causes your system to turn on and off at random. A service technician will be able to troubleshoot the problem.

Prevent AC Short-Cycling with Routine Maintenance

Routine maintenance will help keep your air conditioner from short cycling. Technicians will be able to pinpoint problems before they lead to bigger ones. Short cycling can only happen when your air conditioner is not cared for properly so make it easy by preventing the problem altogether and scheduling an annual service call.
