  • April Fools' Day Air Conditioning Myths

    Palm Air AC|29 March 2016

April Fools’ Day is back at it again with the pranks, practical jokes and outlandish hoaxes, but don’t let these common air conditioning myths trick you into energy inefficiency.

    Air Conditioning Myth #1

Many people run inside from a hot summer day here in Boca Raton, or other parts of humid Florida, and immediately turn down the temperature on the thermostat. The myth here is that cranking down the air will cool the person off quicker, however, this is not the case. The AC system will stay on longer and use more energy to cool the house. Instead of turning down the thermostat one too many degrees, close the window coverings, grab a cold drink and rest a bit under a fan.

    Air Conditioning Myth #2

One thing to not be foolish about this April Fools’ Day, or any day: indoor air quality. A common air conditioning myth says that there is no need to change the air filter inside the AC system each month. A fresh filter monthly ensures that the air being filtered into the home is free from dust, smoke, pollen, animal dander and other tiny organisms. Electrostatic attraction in high-efficiency particulate (HEPA) air filters with a high minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) trap particles. However, these filters can’t do their job if they are dirty, so replacing the filter every 30 days or so will ensure your AC system performs at its best.

    Air Conditioning Myth #3

A bigger air conditioner does not equal better home comfort, unlike common thinking may lead one to foolishly believe. When it’s time to upgrade to a new AC system, many think that a bigger system will cool the home faster or more efficiently. This myth is more than an April Fools’ hoax, though. An air conditioning system that is too large for its space can create a number of issues.

    More Air Conditioning Myths

Have you heard the myth about turning off the AC system whenever leaving the house? What about the myth that says ceiling fans will cool the house as efficiently as an HVAC system? Or that air pollution is only an outdoor problem? These are, in fact, all AC myths that you need not believe this April Fools’ Day, or the rest of the year.
